Many of you probably know I'm not really a tech guy. I'm really just a regular
Linux user who dabbles in some "hi-tech" stuff once in a while. I'd just like
to share a little story about my first "networking" undertaking.
FREE3 has space in the same office as another company with an NT network. I'm
trying to convert all the FREE3 PCs to Linux. We now have one old,
small-footprint Everex box running RedHat 6.2. I'm going to try to load Red Hat
on the two other PCs (currently with Windoze).
Yesterday I tried to get the standalone Linux box onto the network. The
infrastructure was all set up. I had a bit of trouble configuring the ethernet
service since it was setup to look for eth0 *and* eth1 at boot. Some twiddling
with linuxconf solved that and it was set up to lookm for eth0.
Next I had to set up the IP for the card (is that right?). The sysad gave me an
"available IP" and I input that using linuxconf again.
Did it work? Did I miss something. Well, the good news is that after we fixed a
loose cable, I could ping the server! I tried telnet and ftp, but the sevrer
denied me access. At least the Linux box is now on the network. It's so cool to
have an OS that has networking built right in!
Just wanted to share a simple little story.

Now time to pick the brains of our gurus:
I can't figure out how to get internet connectivity (the rest of the network
can get on the net). I'd also like the GNOME file manager to get to see the
rest of thr network. How in the world ,does one go about this? I have zero
prior experience in setting up a network. Help!!!
