Yes, in fact it's reported that since BSD's license allows literally
'ripping off' source code, Microsoft has gone in itself, stealing what
code it finds useful.
Still, i'm more comfortable with just how much more hardware linux
supports. Imagine, we can totally rid ourselves of buying multi-port
serial cards (which cost an arm and a leg) and have a whole bunch of USB
modems instead. And then there's ethernet cards, UDMA ATA 100 support,
some of which are not only for the desktop, but for the usual corporate
server tucked away in the corner. Looking at ease of deployment, i'd go
for Linux anytime. Less headaches, faster deployment.
If i were faced with a network load enough to bring a machine to its
knees, i'd rather just go with LVS and divide the load amongst a cluster.
Bottom line ? Efficiency is only one part of how "good" an OS is.
There are also the issues of maintainability, availability of pre-built
packages (read: you don't have to do them yourself), and the support of a
good distribution maker.
There's also more focus nowadays on development for the Linux platform
than any other non-Microsoft OS, and i guess that's the biggest factor.
