Not really. Well, if you wanted to take FULL ADVANTAGE of ALL the new
features the 2.4.x series has to offer you'd require a complete
overhaul of the system. But in my case, the only reason why I use
2.4.2 at all is because of its USB support (the backports to 2.2.x
don't support any of the devices I own). The only mods I made to red
hat 7 to get it working were to get the USB tools (for diagnostics),
and the hotplugging scripts. These were not even absolutely necessary.
The only extra package that was really needed was a new version of
modutils, because 2.4.x uses a completely different directory structure
for /lib/modules/2.4.x/*.
The 2.4.x series already has a lot to offer even if you do minimal
system updates. My approach has been to do this incrementally: get the
tools you need as you need them, when you feel ready to experiment with
them.
