IIRC, someone (I think it was Orly) mentioned on the list a few months
back that one of the big reasons why NTFS write support was complicated on
Linux is because NTFS is a journalling file system, and the kernel does
not yet have a generic journalling facility.

And by the way, the kernel developers *do* support a lot of things on
the basis educated guesses, although of course nothing as critical as a
file system where data integrity is at stake.
