you must check the memory test of the bios
usually if its shared memory, you would see something like for 64MB
57343 MB + 8192 MB Shared
if you don't see anything like it, and it counts straigt to 256MB, then
you may not be using a shared memory architecture.
try the append=mem=256MB on your lilo prompt.
