You have to enable PAE memory. It's in the 2.4 kernels. Even 2.4 kernels
by default can only have up to 896MB memory unless you enable PAE.

I'm assuming this is a Xeon, right? standard P3's cannot exceed 2GB (but
even so, you have to enable PAE). This is in

 Processor type and features --> High Memory Support

Select 4GB if you have a non-Xeon, and 64GB if you have a Xeon.

there is a 3% (approximately) performance penalty for using PAE (which is
actually a bank-switching scheme!)
