Parentheses all go away when you're working in reverse polish notation. See my reasoning in a previous post in plug-misc where cousin jijo tried (and failed, apparently) to shift this discussion there. I've been working on a stack-based compiler and virtual machine system in my spare time so this sort of approach seems most natural. Doesn't seem like such a 'small math problem' anymore!
