I don't think I ever stated anything contrary to that. I agree with you 100%. The reason why I want to use something cross-platform is to ease migration of our company from Windows to Linux. > Anyway, UP DILIMAN CS students (for the past three/four years)have not > had the luxury of being taught Linux or using Linux for that matter. > Yes, it is the fault of the faculty and I am glad that I was not part of > that (was on-leave). In UP Manila among us CS majors Linux is only starting to get heard now. This is, unfortunately, not because of the faculty (although the IMS and MIU of PGH do a lot of Linux-based development, news of which finds its way to the upper class CS majors). It is largely thanks to us students. Recently I helped set up a Linux box for the OS lab classes. It's ironic how I won't be taking the OS class until next year, and yet my contribution to their class was significant. > Now that I am back - the students are forced to learn Linux -- most, if > not all, their application development are in non-Windows specific > technology. I wish you could help us out in Manila. No no, I wish you taught in Manila, instead. Hahaha. Believe it or not, as of last sem, database lab classes were forced to use Microsoft VisualBasic and Microsoft Access for their project. My girlfriend's ahead of me CS-majors-wise, so I know. I was puking my guts all over the floor when I found out. :( > Although we cannot discount the fact that we have Windows 2000 and XP > (yes, legal licenses) in our labs, we now have Linux installed also. > Development is in Java and Linux so they still get GUI but > non-Microsoft. ;-) We're starting to do Java now. They're force-introducing it in our data structures and algorithms class. I don't agree with their moves. I think one should allow the student the freedom to pick the programming language to use for classes that are by nature language-independent (ie: data structures and algorithms). Or maybe this is just me and my puny little mind. > In line with this, major applications within Diliman are being migrated > from Windows-based to Linux based starting with the Computerized > Registration System (hopefully, the new version will be up in time for > next year's second semester) and the Faculty Information System. Cool!!! :) > Who says Linux is dead in Diliman? ;-) Maybe I should transfer. But I think it's too late. Ah alam ko na, I'll take my MSc there!!! :) :) --> Jijo -- Federico Sevilla III :: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Network Administrator :: The Leather Collection, Inc.
