Access can be both front end and backend... You can create an Access front
end that gets data from MS SQL Server or create it as stand alone where it
has its own storage of data and you can also create it containing tables
only and no forms...

It's not a database server but some people do use it for LAN situation
especially if they want to save money from expensive licences. They do it by
creating a separate Access frontend application then have the backend stored
somewhere on the server then access it thru file sharing...
