i've setup a proxy server before when i'm still
working at an isp, it's fast and stable enough to
support 200+ simultaneous users and as a parent
proxy to some of our clients, and live until today.
i based the configuration of the proxy server
from an article i saw at http://www.devshed.com
(high-performance caching with squid).

technically, it is a threaded squid running on reiserfs
cache partitions plus a lot of tweaking. the hardware i
used was a duron 700 and 3 4Gig low end scsi drives.
