Subject: [plug] Proposed EMail System

I would like to ask for information/comments on the following:

  • If one were to set up an email system, say for several government agencies, what HW/SW/NOS/Telco lines/etc. would be needed?
  • HW: if you are low on budget, you can interconnect the agencies via dialup where (this would save you
leased line/router charges). you will need servers, modems, hub/s, cables, ... SW/NOS: you can use linux
or bsd running on qmail or postfix and ip masquerading (ipchains/ipfilter).

  • What would be the proper comparison areas (cost, administration, speed etc) if one were to implement such a system using LotusNotes/MSExchange/Sun/OpenSource or other available systems?
  • lotusnotes/exchange/sun is to cost, while opensource is to administration. (qmail is to speed :)

  • What measures should be taken into consideration for its reliability?
  • backup dialup lines (much more cheaper than backup leased lines)

  • Will it be beneficial (having a separate email system) as against using the commercial/free email?
  •
having your own mail system is more flexible than being bound to commercial/free mail services
which imposes limit on mail sizes, inbox size...etc. and you still need to give every agency internet access.
