i will try to answer some of doc mana's questions, but i won't go to deep into it technically coz i'm not an expert in this:
> 1. What is the difference between GPRS and the usual GSM technology? > Do I need GPRS? GPRS is the hottest thing in Japan nowadays, where it is known as i-mode. It is capable of sending higher amounts of data. Data is sent as packets instead of as a steady stream in GSM. It's supposed to ease the transition between today's GSM (2G) and vaporware (3G) technology. Do you need GPRS - do you need to send a very high amount of data through wireless? I think one of the features they're touting is to ba able to "text" using not only text, but also including a rich variety of other media.... and if you can get the text-addict pinoys into that, they'll have another killer app on their hands! it remains to be seen though whether everyone will want to go thru another round of phone upgrades... > 2. Using a normal WAP phone, I can wap-browse, but there is no > wap content out there, and the current per minute charge is so > discouraging. No one wants to wap-browse only to get nothing > but pay an arm and a leg for such non-service. Is the situation > better with a GPRS phone? Can you do a real HTML browse with > GPRS phones? hmm, not sure about this but my guess is that it isn't gonna a "real" HTML browse, more of they are gonna enhance the existing WAP capabilities.... anyone out there know more? > 3. What is the cheapest good enough Nokia GPRS phone? How much is > it selling today? Is today the right time to buy one? GPRS is still on testing mode in the country, I think. I know that there's a Motorola phone with GPRS support and Nokia 6310 also has that also comes with Bluetooth support. Dunno if they're available here already, though. gabby _ Philippine Linux Users Group.
