Uhmm, there's a little confusion. GPRS is an upgrade of GSM -- Japan has always had its own protocols. > is capable of sending higher amounts of data. Data is sent as packets > instead of as a steady stream in GSM. It's supposed to ease the transition > between today's GSM (2G) and vaporware (3G) technology. There are already some successful 3G trials in Europe, so I wouldn't call this vaporware. > Do you need GPRS - do you need to send a very high amount of data through > wireless? I think one of the features they're touting is to ba able to > "text" using not only text, but also including a rich variety of other If you're referring to MMS (Multimedia Messaging System), I'm not sure that has anything to do with GPRS. MMS still travels along the 2G GSM network that's installed in most of Europe and Asia. Could be wrong though. > media.... and if you can get the text-addict pinoys into that, they'll have > another killer app on their hands! it remains to be seen though whether > everyone will want to go thru another round of phone upgrades... What I have been doing is getting Yahoo! email through my Siemens. I don't think it's something I'd do routinely. I did have occasion to use it yesterday, when I asked someone to send me mail, and I had to check it at once to see if their mail system was working. Couldn't do it on one of their PCs because they weren't connected to the Internet. (PS: mail didn't get to me <grumble>) > hmm, not sure about this but my guess is that it isn't gonna a "real" HTML > browse, more of they are gonna enhance the existing WAP capabilities.... > anyone out there know more? Let's put it this way -- the microbrowser on the phone is still WML-only. Oddly enough, Siemens provides bookmarks that don't have WML content >:(. However, you *can* browse the Web and view HTML pages using a PDA. There are several browsers available for PalmOS devices -- Handspring's Blazer, AvantGo's, EudoraWeb, some others. Blazer however isn't free beer, the others are. Checked the open source sites for Palm HTML browsers, haven't found any. > GPRS is still on testing mode in the country, I think. I know that there's a Soon to be commercial. > Motorola phone with GPRS support and Nokia 6310 also has that also comes I believe it's the Nokia 8310 that's GPRS-enabled. (A little later) OK, the 6310 is GPRS as well. Mabuhay. TAG : 34. Everybody lies, but it doesn't matter since nobody listens. _ Philippine Linux Users Group.
