No longer true. The US military stopped the intentional degradation of
civilian GPS signals about a year ago. So even civilian GPS equipment can
get +-2 meters resolution now.

The GPS module for the Handspring PDA's is called the Geode, by the way.
And yes, you can upload new maps into the Handspring.
