Oh, I see no war, here, not even a skirmish.  But it's a question that
by its nature can't have unambiguous, agreed-upon answers.

Actually, I think is _is_ really helping.  First, my view in no way
prevents anyone _else_ from asking and answering such questions
according to their individual inclinations.  But, above and beyond that,
I really think it is salubrious to call people's attention to the fact
that the only barrier to entry is your time and trouble.  CD-ROMs are
cheap, the water's warm, and people should be encouraged to just wade in
and get their feet wet.
