No.  The defining trait of a winmodem is that, without the "engine"
software to compensate for omitted circuitry, it doesn't do anything
useful no matter what you try.  The problem with that, as a heuristic
for identifying winmodems, is of course that many people tend to be
unsure about _what_ to try.  ;->

My apologies for missing that, in your earlier post:  My eyes seized
onto the it-can't-be-a-winmodem-because-it's-external matter, and I
didn't really notice all of the rest of that thread.

With that addition, I'm not entirely sure what's going on.  One thing's
for sure:  The Linux 2.4 code for USB is a little immature -- in part
because Linus discarded the earlier USB effort's work (Inaky's), and
started over from scratch.
