yeah, i've decided to give up trying to get it stable on 2.4.
one of these days i may try compiling newer kernels in the
2.4 and 2.5 series and testing with those.  i won't do that
just now though since this notebook is too slow (got enough
Mhz, not enough RAM though).  i'll just work with the
instability (i don't really mind that too much, i was just
trying to optimize thinking that i must be doing something
wrong and linux can't be the problem here :) and resolve 
it some other way later (buy the modem cable for my PC-Card 
modem, or switch to a new notebook later, that's in the 
pipeline and just a short wait away).
