Remote boot hardware... alternative here in conjuction
with the problem is to use the free software watchdog
for linux. Of course, you have to install the watchdog
kernel modules too. It will safely reboot a box if it
can't write to /dev/watchdog.

As for kvm over ip, kludge remote connectivity solution
in the intel world, and very expensive! but i guess it's
better than nothing.

Unix hardware class server got it right by giving virtual
console on the serial port so you don't need any 3rd party
hardware support. And by using LOM, you can power off the
box and power on the the box remotely! The bottomline is
that you can do anything via the virtual console except
put a cd installer on the box. You need a flexible
container which has 70% water content by weight to put the
cd on it.
