Wait,  just to be sure:  by using the Linux software support, you mean
simply making do with the existing IDE interfaces built into the
motherboard, right?

One of the reasons I've discounted software RAID is because I've read
some stuff about it being too slow.  But that was months ago, so maybe
the Linux RAID thing would be just enough for our needs after all! 
*eyes shimmering*

Yes, that I will do.  In fact, I would be glad to test it out.  Here's
another journey into the Linux universe, hurrah!  Besides, there's
nothing to lose and a lot to gain.  If the minimal setup isn't good
enough, then I'll consider getting the RAID controllers.
