Gosh. Why are the people here on PLUG so obsessed with low-end DIY solutions anyway.
Not that I disagree, these solutions have their place. But the sort of drumbeating I read here (PARTICULARLY about this IDE vs SCSI debate). "I can get a big RAID array on the cheap by getting 15 IDE disks and an IDE-SCSI converter to connect them all to my Adaptec 2940, woohoo!" Yes you can make do with such a jury-rigged solution. But does Yahoo use such a solution? NO. They use an ultra-expensive NetApp F720 filer. Why, do you suppose? is it because they're stupid? that they live in fear of not using brand-name solutions? certainly not, but because EVERY SOLUTION HAS ITS PLACE. Can't we just agree on that? this thread has gone on long enough, and everyone seems to think they're the smartest and everyone else is brainless.
