MPL IS "viral", but GPL is "_extremely_ viral" because it infects all the code combined with GPL-licensed code with the additional requirement that they be offered under the GNU license as well. This can be an onerous requirement in some cases and may turn people off, but the mindshare value of the GPL license is such that people still go out of their way to make their licenses bear the label of "GPL-compatible". RMS has clearly been able to 'market' his 'trademarks' (in some cases, we can even say _convert_ people to his _religion_) successfully, but instead of buying the label or name at face value, we should look carefully at exactly how well it helps to encourage people to share their source vis-a-vis other schemes. Again, in http://www.croftsoft.com/library/tutorials/gplmpl/ the poster says "The MPL avoids the three problems associated with the 'viral' nature of GPL in that it: 1. allows for the combination of MPL code with other code in a larger work without requiring that all code in the entire work be distributed under the same license;" And with some additional points he offers the premise that MPL-style licenses are far more flexible (while still retaining the value of the copyleft mechanism which I never was against in the first place) and thus more likely to propagate the *ideal of open source* (and not just one man's interpretation of what it should mean). Rick, please bother to read and analyze properly. If not the article in the link, then at least my post. I don't believe I was even hiding my points between the lines, they were pretty explicit. _ Philippine Linux Users Group.
