That really is a form of discrimination. Find out if the company is an equal
opportunity employer or not.

That's true, most of the UNIX progs are MALE. But it doesn't mean FEMALE
developers
are not competitive enough. Not being bias though. If by any chance, an
expert
FEMALE UNIX PROG happen to come across their ad, whose loss would that be?
The employer's. :-)

However, in fairness to the employers, some have considerable reasons in
specifying
their preference either on a male or female applicant. Sometimes it depends
on the working
environment, and the scope of the duties and responsibilities.

I was gonna comment on that too. But my "prognostication" is that -- most
UNIX/C programmers are MALE. So this was a lame attempt to "spruce up"
their workplace -- and perhaps, add to the "victim^Mfemale prospect
population."
