hello. has anybody encountered this?

1.) installed redhat 8.0 with mysql server packages.
2.) run mysql with "service mysqld start", it initialized and started.
3.) granted the proper privileges on test database.
4.) CANNOT connect to the database via the network port(3306). the
connection keeps getting dropped. nothing on /var/log/mysql.log. "ERROR
2013: Lost connection to MySQL server during query" is all i get on a
mysql client.
5.) i get successful connects via the domain sockets though...but all
network connections fail with "lost connections".

what gives? any ideas?
