i read earlier this week that this is due to the glibc update from redhat
which specifically causes this to happen against tcp connections to mysql.
i just couldnt find that article now.  it also says it wont matter if you 
recompile mysql from scratch and that the mysql server drops at a tcp
connection even before it reads the db tables you are trying to access.
i dont remember if the article noted a fix for this.
