thanks to those who've replied. they made me realize and verify that the problem may be in nss_ldap. you see, i have a RH8.0 server set up for what i previously described. my groups and users are in an ldap directory running on localhost. got authenticating and nameservice switch to work, my ldap-created users are logging in properly already.
i guess the cvs problem was just a symptom. it was further verified by the following : [owner1@server] groups dev [owner1@server] groups owner1 dev group1 it's soooo inconsistent. both groups are in the ldap directory. *scratches head* an strace of groups for both instances reveal that the first invocation stops after the default group is found. at this rate, i may have to move back to /etc/passwd and shadow. but i'd really hate losing the "central user account repository feature". --vince. _ Philippine Linux Users Group.
