To me, one of the best aspects of Linux is that the
primary mode of interaction with it has always been
through the command line. The GUI tools may provide
an easy introduction for beginners but for experienced
users the most comprehensive functionality is always
available via CLI tools.

Slackware respects the user who understands that fact.
The main intention of my Slackware advocacy to get more
people to try out this distro and help preserve the
primacy of the CLI which I am apprehensive about losing
in the increasing 'Window-ization' of other linux
distros.

I think Debian does too, but now that I know how
to compile, make and remove/install packages,
and it turns out to be quite a clean process under
Slackware, I find that I'd rather do my own compile
and install from tar.gz source - I get better control
over the process and avoid what I believe will be a lot
of additional maintenance a ports system will require
if you start making your own changes to source code.

I'm not against GUIs and I'm all for gaining a more
polished Linux GUI, but not at the cost of making CLI
tools a mere afterthought like they tend to be under
Windows.

I strongly belive that all core functionality
should be accessible via command line tools first
and GUI ones 2nd. The GUI should be more of a wrapper
over the CLI tools rather than a separate entity that
adds its own features.

I hope they take their time and make it good. The jump
to 9.0 moniker is probably due to the move to gcc 3.x.
