I am actually looking at a GSM Modem, much the same as the Cellular Engine TC35 Terminal http://www.siemens-mobile.com/btob/CDA/presentation/ap_btob_cda_presentation_contentproduct/0%2C2953%2C49_244357%2CFF.html but what I want at the moment is just to test SMS capability and what we can get (and do) with it at a corporate level.

Like I said above, I just need to test it at the moment and maybe we can develop other applications (web-based) that uses the SMS capability. 
 
Do your modems accept SIM cards?

You only really need the data cable and phone/GSM modem (and of course a
computer!) for the hardware. Software, either Gnokii or gsmlib. Gsmlib
at any rate is not a pain to set up and the programs available are
easily usable with the shell, perl, or your scripting language of
choice.

What is it exactly you are trying to do?
