Hmmm. I'm using Solaris 8 but the format(1M) command won't accept H>27! is 
there another way of labeling the drive?

These won't work. The Promise RM8000 contains 8x Promise PDC20267 ATA 
controller and an Intel i960 processor. Basically you plug 8 IDE hard 
drives into it, and configure it either via front-panel LCD or through a 
serial console (e.g. RAID0, 1, 3, 5, 10, 30, 50..) it then presents the 
entire volume as a SINGLE SCSI DRIVE (it has an Ultra-SCSI interface on 
the back).

You can't individually address the drives, as they're not SCSI at all.  
Also you can't create more than one array. So the add-more-LUNs and JBOD
mode wouldn't really work..
