You can definitely have Heads up to the maximum of
heads=64. Take a look at a newer and contributed
format.dat:

ftp://ftp.cs.toronto.edu/pub/jdd/sunmanagers/format.dat

You can copy this to /etc. You might want to check also
scsiinfo:

ftp://ftp.cs.toronto.edu/pub/jdd/scsiinfo

to a given system, as seen by a supported SCSI device driver."

One good thing about scsiinfo is it can examine the logical
disk that you have and create info which can be inserted to
format.dat.
