I've been wondering if there is any version of ls that works like dir
in 4dos. For those of you unfamiliar with 4dos, before the advent of
long filenames in DOS, it was not easy to have really descriptive
filenames because of the 8.3 limitation. The 4dos solution[1] was to
write its own version of dir that would display the filenames on the
left followed by a longer description of the file on the right. The
description of each file is stored in a file named "descript.ion"
which is suppressed from a directory listing with the modified DIR.

If there is, I'd be delighted to find out. If there is none, it seems
like a good idea to implement. ;)

1) I am not sure if I am attributing this correctly to the creators of
4DOS or if it was just popularized by them. It might be that on the
BBS circuits, the idea of storing file descriptions in "descript.ion"
was already in use and the 4DOS people (JP Software
[http://www.jpsoft.com]) integrated it into their command shell
replacement. Other old conventions used were to use 00index.txt to
store long descriptions of files.
