And I don't see it as being too hard to do either. It looks like the
perfect application for Berkeley DB/GDBM. The only thing will be
managing the .description.db files in every directory. Should also be
trivial to extend to Nautilus or <insert your favorite file manager
here>. Also has potential for producing a nice content-based search
engine for your files. :)
