Because the people who actually _do_ things wanted to.  

Which brings me back to the fact that you want _other_ people to build
and run something because you want it (but not enough to do it
yourself).  I guess that kind of rubs me the wrong way:  Correct me if
I'm wrong, but I believe you're not offering to either build or
administer anything.  You basically want to volunteer other people's
time and effort.

In my circles, that doesn't work, and is considered a bit annoying to
try.  But whatever works for you.
