The Zire has only 2MB ram, and applications (.prc) are run-in-place
without loading them. The linux kernel is nearly 2MB
but it needs additional memory for kernel data, and for running
linux applications. Also some memory is needed as "disk".
Now there is no way 2MB can serve all these functions.

The Palm IIIxe has 8MB of ram, and has reflashable rom.
So you can actually replace the PalmOS in rom with Linux,
so you do not need to touch the 8MB to hold/run the linux
kernel, and can reserve that 8MB for "ram" and "disk". This
is actually what the makers of LinuxDA have done (see
http://www.linuxda.com/).

On the Zaurus, you have 16MB of reflashable rom which holds the
linux kernel and many applications, and 64MB which serves as
"ram" and "disk". Even that much space is too little for many
linux apps, so some users get several MB of auxiliary storage
(SD or CF cards).

The Palm IIIxe will be the most appropriate for this.
