It is always a good idea to consider yourserf a citizen of the world, beyond cultures and nations. I also imagine a world utopia where being a Filipino or American or Chinese would not matter; everyone belongs to the human race. But in reality, this does not happen, and I bet would not happen in another millenium. A good sense of history would tell that our country's relationship with other countries has always been tainted with political mess where we are at the lower end of those relationships. I think it would be foolish for us Filipinos to forget about our nationalism and consider ourselves to be citizens of the world while, for example, the Americans are dealing with us with their own national interest in mind. To always consider your own national interest is not bad. To consider yourself a citizen of the world is not bad either. It's just that your own national interest should come first because of the present condition in world relations. While the "human race" is still just a biological category and not a political reality, I wouldn't think for a minute that nationalism is a shady and emotional concept. -- Victor B.
