It is obvious that only a handful of people at PLUG have took advantage of SourceForge a perfect venue for maintaining open source projects especially distros for FREE. Reinvention is pointless, I agree but the culture of Linux is not really reinvention but innovation which we PLUGGers definitely lack. Mandrake wasn't made by the French alone, Debian wasn't made by the Germans alone, and definitely RedHat wasn't made by the Americans alone. Sure thing we can do our own independent distribution we may not afford a 50T/mo senior programmer(that's a dream job for an open source project) but I am sure there would be Chinese or Indian open source hackers there that will do it for free just for the kick of it. Then if they like the distro the user's will have to pay for the support of course this is where you are going to get the maintenance overhead if you wish to move out the distro out of sourceforge or if your distro is totally awesome sell it to bigger boys. > > And no - it doesn't say much to create a distribution and just leave it > out to pasture. Because if you don't, I don't know where you belong. It's also about sense of belonging unless you won't mind using your dad's car til your 40? > > And don't get me started on this patriotism crap.
