yeah, I had success in making this work with Linux... in fact, this is now part of our production servers where students can receive messages, i.e. "No Classes"...i created applicaitons using PHP/MySQL...
the app that i used was gsmlib found here:
i bought mine for about P17,000 from INTEX Telecom Systems... tel number 8977577 and look for Image Veral...

Is this the recommended device to get to do
"SMS applications", i.e., where users send a
text message to a given cell phone number and then get a
text response back based on, e.g., database search?
Any ideas where to buy one of these, or how much it costs?
Anyone had success getting this device to work on Linux
or BSD machine?
