Recently, faculty of the Dept. of Info Systems and Computer Science
at Ateneo got new PCs to replace their existing "antique" desktops.
The one I got had 256MB ram, 1.8GHz Pentium 4, 40GB IDE disk,
Nvidia GeForce 64MB video card, RealTek 100Mbps ethernet, and
LG 52x24x52x CDRW drive. I had nothing to do with selecting the specs
and I am quite thankful to whoever selected the units that I got
something quite "okay" -- something that brings me to the year 2003.

The real surprise is that what used to be 45 minutes of wait time
for a 650MB CD to burn using cdrecord at 2X speed, now takes me a
only little over 3 minutes. The magic incantation is now:

cdrecord -v dev=0,0,0 -eject -data image.iso

I used to have the option "-speed=2", but I discovered that if
I do not put any speed setting, burning is done at the maximum
possible speed. Heavenly!

I love this machine.
