were in the same boat. read
http://www.linux-mag.com/2003-11/availability_01.html
http://linux-ha.org/index.html
http://www.kernel.org/software/mon/

looks like heartbeat & drbd will make postgres replicated in realtime pero
active/inactive lang nga.

what if postgres crashes but heartbeat can still ping the primary server?
then there won't be any takeover? here comes "mon" which can be
configured to stop and start postgres if it detects postgres doesn't work.
and if it doesn't work within 1 min then ask heartbeat to let master die
for slave to take over.

just tried it with fping. like if we cannot ping our ip within 3 seconds,
send alert. if we cannot ping within 20 seconds, restart network. and it
works!

we need that functionality for ssh, xdmcp, nfs, xfs, postgres, and the
network. there is an ssh.monitor, postgres.monitor, and fping.monitor,
but have to look for or xdm, xfs, nfs monitors.

but anyway, "mon" is cool! it's the sysad when you're not there :)
