I tried and installed both Red Hat 9.0 and Mandrake Linux 9.2 and I noticed that not only does Mandrake boots faster BUT it loads applications faster too.
QUESTIONS: 1. Does the optimizations for Pentium processors have great effect in this regard? AND by how much increase in performance?
2. I came to know about an IBM article about speeding up the Linux boot process. Has anyone successfully tried this? [This feature has been requested for Mandrakelinux]
TIA

Mandrake forever. :)
why does mandrake install a lot faster than rh? skipping less popular libraries / packages?
Primarily, yes :)
Also, using Mandrake's built-in URPMI software installer, it becomes a lot
easier to install software (just like Debian's apt-get). So there is no
pressing demand to install all (or most) of the software, as it could be
done later either in command line URPMI mode or graphical mode.
You guys should try Mandrake Community Ten. Unlike other $$commercial$$
systems out there that become slower (on the same hardware) as you
increase versions) Mandrake actually performs faster as you upgrade it. :)
I've literally experienced it as i've upgraded from 9.1, to 9.2 to 10...
