It is still just as non-obvious right now as when I first read the copy-pasted E-week article in your message. That MS has an 'embrace and extend' strategy was never denied. However, you have not offered an iota of evidence since to back up the assertion that releasing open source code is /part of said strategy/.

IE integration/bundling has nothing to do with open source.  Neither does
MS' enhancement/extension of open protocols like DNS.  The writer whose
article tries to make the tenuous (read: lame) connection between these
two and MS open source doesn't even know what DNS properly stands for.
