I think the release of WiX is not to be construed as part of MS' "embrace, extend, extinguish" strategy... I just view it as MS' baby steps to "uncharted waters" of more liberal licenses, which might be to release tiny projects using more or less open source licenses (read: NOT GPL) but in no way open-sourcing the more established projects, nor ensuring interoperability with the rest of the world.
