Actually I did read it very well, and that's the reason I could see holes in the author's reasoning whereas you didn't. ;-)

It's a perfectly valid argument and certainly no ad hominem (if you check
the meaning in the dictionary, you'll realize that *you're* the one employing
ad hominems here).  The author is trying to make an argument based on
technical considerations but he doesn't even know his terms!
