This is exactly why we have to be circumspect about all that 'Open source being an /inherently/ superior development model' hype propagated by people like ESR. MS was indeed able to rise up to the challenge of Linux in a _credible technical manner_ despite its not being open source.
If you view open source vs. microsoft as opposing forces, then I have to say that open source has its [technical/architectural] work cut out for it to remain relevant and not rest on zealotry and/or notions of inherent superiority. The Death Star (.NET/Longhorn) is fast approaching and it looks like it is armed to the teeth. The situation is so bad that you've already got spies (like de Icaza) on the inside working for the enemy. ;-D
