But in the case of a "Swap Death" problem its easier though to just reboot the machine 
rather than wait for your ssh prompt.  This happened to me several times and it took 
me a very long time to kill some X applications so I could recover the system.  

Incidentally, my "Swap Death" problem is related to Linux getting fat.  The problem 
occured because I upgraded to MDK 9 but did not redo my partitions. My previous RH 
system did not have any problems with my 64-128Mb ( I forgot) swap partition but 
apparently it was not enough for MDK 9 and I would sometimes get "Swap Death".
