I agree. That was also my impression on KDE when I first tried it, and in 2.1.0 it didn't have proper support for antialiased fonts (sigh). Gnome 1.4 was a lot better, since it didn't pretend to be good-looking, but it was useful enough and didn't eat so much memory.
