i have slackware 10 on dell latitude c600 laptop. Xircom combo NIC/Modem 56 
PCMCIA card is fully supported (the onboard PCTel modem won't work).
problem also with a USB Cyberdrive CD Burner - can't make it work.
Dell has been working well with GNU/Linux so you might want to give
their laptops a consideration.
