I'm using DamnSmall Linux (www.damnsmalllinux.org) for my very old laptop. It's an old Fujitsu 635T (Lifebook I think). It's specs? Pentium 133 with 32MB RAM and a 1.2 GB hard drive.
I believe its built in modem was detected without a hitch (I haven't used the modem yet; I connect to the net via an old PCMCIA LAN card). The said LAN card was detected without a hitch. The problem was the sound card. I did a bit of research on the forums and got it working in 3 hours. :) I use it to check emails, surf the 'net every now and then, play mp3s, write simple documents via Abiword 2++, and even give presentations. I made a presentation via OO 1.1.1 on my Linux desktop pc and exported it to flash. I then used the standalone Flash player from Macromedia to give the presentation. Worked like a charm. :) I going to try the DSL package of Siag office because it has a presentation program. On Thu, 2004-07-08 at 18:30, JM Ibanez wrote: > * Is a Linux laptop suggestable? For me, yes. I often give presentations and the standalone Flash player is suffice to wow the audience. Also, I have to be sure that my pc does not get infected by virii nor does it infect other pcs when I go to clients and plug in to their network. I have some sensitive documents on my laptop. Windows 95, the OS that came with the laptop, can give me enough security (basta may username at password, papasa na muna sa akin). Windows 98 would thrash my specs. DSL boots quickly, too. > * Distro - I'm leaning towards Debian and Slackware, but if you've run > RH or MDK on a laptop, please share your experiences Give DSL a whirl. > * Desktop environment - I'm primarily a GNOME user, so I'm leaning > towards GNOME 2.4/2.6, but might switch to using XFCE 4. It works fine and I like the minimalist feel. - Andoy -- Philippine Linux Users' Group (PLUG) Mailing List [EMAIL PROTECTED] (#PLUG @ irc.free.net.ph) Official Website: http://plug.linux.org.ph Searchable Archives: http://marc.free.net.ph .
