"Knoppix system set up and running"? Uhh... what do you mean by "set up
and running"? Don't you usually just plug in a Knoppix CD and boot away?
Or did you decide to install Knoppix on your hard drive?

I have a Matrix 3.5" USB2.0 enclosure as well. All you need are the
proper modules loaded (or a kernel with them enabled) for your USB
controller, and the usb-storage module (or again, built into the
kernel). I haven't had any problems using my USB2.0 enclosure from
Debian GNU/Linux with 2.4.26 or Knoppix 3.4 2004-05-17 which also runs
kernel 2.4.26. I don't have a copy of Knoppix 3.3 anymore so I wouldn't
know if older versions of Knoppix had problems with usb-storage.

(For whatever it's worth, you can boot with the USB enclosure plugged in
or boot up then plug it in. Either way it "Just Works".)
