if you want interface via serial/cellphone, you can also use nokia 30 cost around 18k, havent tried it with kannel but used it with smsd from http://www.isis.de/members/~s.frings/smstools/run.html
i think you can use short numbers even if you use the serial/cellphone method by just buying/leasing a vanity number from the telco.
