Hmm. I'm wondering for what reason they'll shift to nix. Piracy is still a boom in here. So no reason to bang the average Juan's head on the wall just for the off-chance that he'll use nix because of savings. But piracy on digital media is something that won't really go away. Another thread's worth of discussion... veering off again.

I agree--piracy will never ever go away here as long as the prices of original media remain sky high.

Well... yes. But you can't really blame the price. The originals are supposed to be of higher quality (supposed to be).

But even if the prices are competitive, digital media *will* always be pirated. Why? Because it can be. The format lends itself well to copying. The strongest crypto won't be able to protect it. How can your player play the media? It has to be decoded first... Yes you can then start copying from here ;)

You can find an old (but still good) argument by Schneier about the futility of protecting digital media here:

I feel the likes of DMCA will be implemented in our country soon. More arrests, more sidewalk and mall raids, more trucks crushing cds on TV. More actors/artists protesting/pleading to the public.

But it's all futile.

Technology is on piracy's side. Bandwidth goes up. Faster, reliable connections. Bigger storage. Cheaper burners. Very cheap media.

The last thing they could do is police every computer, or empower every ISP along this line.

But it won't work. None of it will.

What can they do? Think of new ways to sell digital media that *uses* it's copyability rather than fighting it.

Parting shot: IMHO, everyone has the right to do whatever they want with their own work and that patents and copyrights are there for a reason.

I hope I don't see any argument pushing for GPL'ed works. GPL is good but some people may want not just recognition but monetary reward for their hardships and talent.

GPL is a choice. Not a means to survive. If you want to give out free software, cool. I do this myself too. But some people want cash and fame. And GPL won't work for them. It's their right to sell their work. Let's all respect that.
